Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions 

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly.
  5. Shape into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Cut a deep cross on top of the loaf.
  7. Bake for 40 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
