Ingredients

  • 4 large onions thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 4 slices French bread toasted

Instructions 

  1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  2. Add sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  3. Pour in beef broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to broil. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted bread slices and grated Gruyère cheese.
  5. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes. Serve hot.
