Don’t hate me, but I’ve never really struggled with acne. You may consider me lucky, but trust me, the grass is greener on the other side. Instead of acne on my face, I was blessed with red bumps all over my arms for my ENTIRE LIFE! It’s called keratosis pilaris and it really sucks. I’ve spent money on all sorts of scrubs and pore cleansers, etc. etc. etc. Nothing works all that great.
On top of that I struggle with dry skin, that’s not fun either.
Well in my years of trying to resolve my nasty blotchy, bumpy skin (can you tell I’m a bit self-conscious about it), I found something that works. And I bet you’ve got it in your kitchen right now!
I feel like this needs a drumroll…….
Baking soda? YES! Baking soda! This stuff is AMAZING! My sister has had a real struggle with acne, but since she’s pregnant, she can’t take strong acne medications. Her face was peeling and even makeup couldn’t help all that much so I told her to try scrubbing her face with baking soda. And within minutes the flakiness subsided and she was able to cover everything up with makeup!
Here’s to the end of expensive scrubs and washes!!!!
It helps with:
- dry skin
- flaky skin
- facial acne
- body acne
- keratosis pilaris
- razor burn (I’ll explain how)
How to use it?
- Rinse your skin with warm water.
- Pour some baking soda into your hands
- Scrub your skin with those miraculous, microscopic granules! (You want your skin to be wet enough that some of the baking soda will mix in with the water, letting it scrub your pours with the fine powder.) Be careful that you do not over scrub. Scrubbing too hard can cause a rash or just make your skin really red and sensitive for a little while.
Now for razor burn… I have sensitive skin so I tend to get razor burn whenever I shave, especially if I shave fast. BUT I’ve learned that if I scrub my legs and arms with baking soda first, loosening up that top layer of skin and smoothing out the bumps, I avoid razor burn all together! I even use it on my underarms!
Sugar Works Too!
If you don’t have baking soda, no worries. Granulated sugar works great too!
I’ve learned that sugar works best for scrubbing arms and legs, while baking soda works best on face, lips, hands, and underarms.
I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me!

I was going to my very first book club meeting in our new area and everyone was invited to bring treats. Being the baking addict that I am, I decided it was time to try a new recipe! I found cookie dough brownies saved in my baking pins and thought it was the perfect choice! […]
Lately I’ve been looking at all the valentines stuff; I love it, the hearts, the colors and the decor but the holiday…not so much. This year I’m changing my outlook. Our kids know we love them but sometimes saying I love you a different way is exactly what we need and it’s fun. For the […]
How is it almost Valentine’s Day already?? Wasn’t it JUST Christmas? I’m pretty sure I was still singing holiday tunes yesterday and the half a foot of snow on the ground has me convinced it’s still the holidays. Who else ate their way through the holidays and then made a New Year’s resolution to workout […]
For mutual a few weeks ago we taught the girls how to do freezer meals. Total cost was $35 and we ended up with 21 meals, not bad for a college student. (I didn’t add the cost of the cookies into the activity because I had everything on hand.) We made 7 taco soups, 7 […]
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am a CREATURE OF HABIT. Yup. I’m boring as can be. I eat two eggs for breakfast every morning, I always curl my hair, and I have about a dozen striped navy and white shirts. I realized one day that I was doing Tiny’s hair […]
It’s that time of year again… pumpkin EVERYTHING!!!! It’s still in the high 80’s here in California so it’s not quite feeling like fall yet, but a girl can pretend, right? My hubby laughed at me when I walked out of the closet dressed in a blanket scarf. I may have to sweat through it, […]
Have you tried leather stamping? Oh man I can see myself getting really carried away with these awesome little bracelets. This was a craft that we did at girls camp and I’ll be honest I’ve been making playing around with them for the last few weeks. It can be a little tricky, trying to line things […]
